AOI Illustration Awards 2013

posted by Emma Fisher October 15, 2013

The AOI Illustration Awards are back again at Somerset House to present the highlights of this year’s contemporary illustration awards. For the first time in 37 years they have created a shortlist that includes illustrators both from the UK and the rest of the world, broadening the opportunity for illustrators to showcase what they do best. The only independently jury-selected illustration competition in the UK, it really is a collection of some of the finest talent around. Get down to the show before it closes on the 27th October – you’re in for a treat.

A shortlist of 15 winners has been selected, from which two overall award winners will be announced in the categories of Professional Illustration and New Talent. Taking a look around the show we pick out a few of our own favorites, from established Illustrators to the best of new kids on the block.

Lesley Barnes confirmed her established style, winning the professional award in the Advertising category for her playful posters for the Museum of Childhood, creating engaging imagery for adults and children.

The awesome Paul Johnson was also shortlisted for his editorial work on the cover of Little White Lies magazine.

Joe Caslin work combines street art and illustration by installing large-scale drawings of young men at specific locations. The stunning work has a positive message and social impact to, with participants all being 16 years of age – he aims ‘re-establish respect for and showcase the capabilities and power of our nation’s sons’ as he feels young men are pushed to the very edges of society. What a very commendable and well-executed project.

Natasha Durley was shortlisted in the New Talent award for her rightfully popular illustrations featuring quirky characters & bizarre landscapes; I think she will be around for a long time to come.

There are too many great artists to commend, check out the show and this year’s shortlisted talent for further details.
