San Francisco Zine Fest 2015

posted by Hannah Dawson September 4, 2015

It’s that time of year again when faithful zine fans and DIY artists celebrate diverse printed goodness at the 14th annual San Francisco Zine Fest on Sunday, September 6. SF Zine Fest seeks to advance the do-it-yourself ethos and celebrate and support independent writers, artists and creators, allowing them to share their work with an ever-growing audience in workshops, exhibitions and public events.

This year SFZF 2015 has been compact into a one day event extravaganza as opposed to the usual two, and as a result of saving on the extra day’s venue costs it is the exhibitors and attendees who will reap the benefits. The tables are a lot cheaper this year, making it more affordable to exhibit and a great opportunity for newcomers to test the waters without the risk so there will be lots of fresh creative talent on show. The panelists are now being paid! Since the DIY community is established on the principle that all voices deserve a place in front of an audience the panelists this year will receive travel expenses, so nobody is kept from speaking for lack of funds. Plus, the SFZF guest of honour, Madeleine Flores, has been paid to design their official event poster (be sure to pick up your print at the Fest!).

So what else is new this year? For the first time Zine Fest has been ‘curated’ and is as inclusive as possible with all individual exhibitors given a half-table space with collectives taking over full tables. You’ll also notice that their table map is jam packed with over 200 different exhibitors to check out, not forgetting the SFZF zine library will be present for your browsing and chilling pleasure.

And did we mention its free admission? If you are in the area we think that this is well worth a visit.
