We’re excited to announce that the latest issue of our magazine Print Isn’t Dead™ is almost ready for print. And today, we would like to introduce Hansje van Halem, an independent graphic and editorial designer who has created one of the amazing cover designs in our Artist Series. In honour of her special edition, we pitched a few questions at this talented Hansje van Halem to find out about her idea behind this amazing limited edition cover.

Please introduce yourself.
I have worked as an independent graphic designer since 2003. I have great love for typography, book design and all other types of printed matter. Besides creating letters, textures and patterns (digitally and manually), I love to solve editorial problems with typography and materialisation. I find repetitive work soothing. It calms me down and allows me some time to think about other things while being productive at the same time. I like the tension between a systematic approach, legibility and (ir)regularity. I find it equally interesting to only draw the textures and end up with patterns.

How would you describe your creative practice in three words?
Quantity is quality.

How did you come to the final design for the cover of Element 003?
I designed this type in such a way that if can form a continuous optical block. I designed it in the summer of 2014 and had never used it for anything. This cover for Element 003 was a perfect occasion to see my design in use. And to be honest, a previous design got kindly rejected. I think this one turned out much better!
