Ladies of Letters

posted by Mel Luff May 6, 2015

Ladies of Letters came to life when two letterpress fanatics (and cat lovers) met on a picnic blanket back in 2013. The collaborative project between Meburnian artists Amy Constable and Carla Hackett aims to bring a more human element to a digitally dominated world through beautifully tactile typefaces and traditional techniques.

Their first series Alphabet City, was an ‘exploration of type, colour and alphabet fun’ in which each letter was hand drawn by Carla in pencil and ink and then carefully printed (using their 120 year old letterpress machine!).

The duo now print for a range of designers, illustrators and agencies in Australia, working out of their studio in Melbourne.

Their most recent project ‘Flourish Together’ combines the skills of different guest letterers from across Australia. Their ethos being that ‘we are better together’ they work collectively on a series of greetings cards with the proceeds going to the Australian literacy and numeracy foundation.
