Are Friends Electric – Studies in Neon Exhibition

posted by POP Members June 7, 2021

In 2019 Print artists Ricardo Corte and Jonathan Lawes scouted Instagram to find kindred spirits they could bring together for a group show themed loosely though the use of bold, neon, and fluorescent colour schemes. Their work the only judging factor, the duo were able to gather a diverse collection of 13 strangers, some established artists, and some just starting out. Getting them all to contribute, communicate, and collaborate was no mean achievement, but Instagram and WhatsApp took the strain and the electrifying show came together.

The exhibition was originally planned for March 2020. The artists were due to meet for the first-time face to face, and then Covid hit. Like everything else in the world, the exhibition was cancelled (in literally the first week of the first ever lockdown). The show was up but the doors were locked. When the gallery reopened in the summer their schedule was adjusted and Are Friends Electric removed. It was the show that never really happened.

Fast forward to summer 2021, lockdowns have come and gone, and the exhibition which had been given up on has now been resurrected, a second life presented to it by the Espacio Gallery. Also, as a serendipitous twist of fate, the timing of the exhibition will now coincide with the UK returning to normality (if all goes to schedule); the exhibition neatly bookending Covid in the UK.

With a few line up changes – a lot has happened over the last 12 months – the neon show must go on and Are Friends Electric is back for 2021 . Featured artists include; @amy_gardner_artist_, @mistermarcjones, @iamcyanblue, @jonathanlawes, @montezmakes, @vpattersongraphicarts, @sonofafoxx, @keldastorm, @xanthebonsall, @art_by_villain, @donklondon, @oli.fowlerart, and @mew.welch.

Bringing a spectacle of wall to wall colour, and fluro and neon to melt your eyes and warm your hands, Are Friends Electric is taking place from Monday 21st until Sunday 27th June at Espacio Gallery, London. A Private Viewing will take place on Thurs 24th June from 6-9pm.
