Hannah Höch :: Whitechapel Gallery

posted by Emma Fisher January 28, 2014

The artistic and cultural pioneer Hannah Höch is being celebrating in her first major British exhibition at The Whitechapel Gallery this year. Her career spanned from 1910s to 1970s and the exhibition features over 100 works sourced from international collection; including photomontages, watercolours and woodcuts from the most prominent moments of her career. Her college work combined imagery retrieved from fashion magazines and illustrated journals to create a comment on society of the time.

A member of Berlin’s Dada movement in the 1920s she was influential in the development of 20th century collage, using her natural ability in design and composition to create imagery with humor and beauty, whilst themes from gender to racial stereotypes often underpinned her work. The exhibition runs from the 15th January to the 23rd March, definitely something I will be heading down to see.
