Chrissy Emmerson: Open Water Series

As the world faces a pandemic, many creatives have been using this time to refine their disciplines, producing work that reflects what is most important to them, what they miss, and what they have been taking for granted. For printmaker Chrissy Emmerson, this has been the ability to visit the sea; a place that is often the source of much of her inspiration.

Throughout the pandemic we have seen air pollution levels decrease due to a reduction in car and air travel, yet water pollutants have remained much the same. This not only effects ocean habitats, but also impacts on the spread of the disease, as it is still unclear if the sewage discharged into our oceans has the potential to spread Covid-19. In response to this, Chrissy created a series of three linocuts highlighting endangered and vulnerable sea creatures, whilst also reflecting the beauty and wonder of the ocean.

Chrissy felt that it was important that the sea was as much of a focus as the animal itself. She used fine and thicker cuts to create the impression of movement in the ocean, and the rise and fall of currents. It was important that these lines flowed well around the animals, and as such were hand drawn directly onto the lino.

The prints which include a Blue Whale, Green Turtle, and a Giant Manta Ray, were all created using lino, and printed in blue gradients at her home studio in Somerset, England. Knowing that she may have to remain at home for some time, Chrissy replaced her bamboo hand baron with a Woodzilla A3 press, which has resulted in a more defined print.

The three prints were created so they can sit side by side or as stand-alone pieces.
