GDSM.Prints by Guy Smart

Guy Smart is a Brighton based independent linocut printmaker, and the face behind GDSM.Prints. Having been introduced to the craft at a young age by his mother, who was a professional artist, Guy quickly developed a love for the medium, and had some of his first work displayed at a gallery close to where he lived.

He picked up a variety of digital and traditional design techniques whilst studying for a degree in Automotive Design. However, Guy left the course after deciding he wanted to focus on more traditional design methods.

Due to COVID-19, Guy was furloughed by his work and self-quarantined with his partner, who encouraged and supported him to pick up lino printing again. This provided him with the opportunity to focus all his time on refining the craft, making new prints, and exploring different design inspirations.

His pieces begin their life as a digital mockup, and Guy then plays around with different backgrounds, orientations and sizing. Next, they are transferred onto the linoblock, either by tracing the digital design, or by drawing straight onto the block.

Guy’s artworks are mostly inspired by his travels around South Africa, where he completed a diving qualification. The array of marine life, and the colourful patterns and textures of the creatures he witnesses whilst underwater are reflected in his lino prints, which he juxtaposes with bold and eye-popping backgrounds. The printmaker creates these backgrounds by playfully experimenting with creating different optical illusions and geometric designs.
