Letterpress Memories

posted by POP Members September 13, 2018

Molly is a passionate print lover. As part of her People of Print Membership, we’ve chosen to highlight her university FMP project titled Letterpress Memories. In her final year, she fell in love with Letterpress printing and gathered a range of data focused around the practice. She even got interesting responses from infamous designers Anthony Burrill and Erik Spiekermann.

Through her responses she realised no two people had the same experiences with the method, whether they loved or hated it – each had different ways of describing it. The questions generated a lot of good terminologies and quotes that Molly could use to form some kind of outcome that she could showcase each person’s experience, including her own.

After sorting through all her collected data and 26 quotes later, Letterpress Memories was born. Each quote was printed on a different selection of paper, with the choice of paper helping to reflect the quote in some way to evaluate the reader’s experience when reading. Giving them a sense of what it might actually be like to Letterpress if they had never done it themselves.

Her final outcome took weeks of trial and error with over 100 different paper finishes, stocks and types used to find the perfect style and feel overall. Finally, the large completely letterpressed book gives everyone a look into the mind of a printer and how they may have interacted with this timeless piece of history.
