Chris Brown | Refueled Magazine

posted by POP Members October 14, 2021

One of the great tragedies of modern life is the death of the personal journal. Chronicling the events of the day, or rather contextualising moments in a life, has given birth to countless novels, songs, films, and art. It can be said, with not a hint of hyperbole, that journaling is human history entire. Today, it is reduced (literally and figuratively) to a tweet or gram. Chris Brown, a renaissance man and creative bon vivant, is not just keeping the romantic ideal of the journal alive – he has boldly endeavoured to mould it into a new form of media, and in the process evolving it into a form of art in its own right. He calls it Refueled Magazine.⁣ ⁣

Inspired by the trappings of his youth coming of age during the “cultural decade” of the 1960s – in particular the era-defining large format photojournalism of LIFE and probing satire of MAD, Chris created his first magazine at the age of eight. Even in those early days his approach was rooted in his personal worldview and voice.

Thumbing through an issue of Refueled today, its pages are filled with the people and subjects that move him to the point where he feels almost an obligation to feature them. Echoes of that boy with his typing paper are encoded throughout. The publication, at its purest, is a chronicle of the more remarkable corners of the independent maker community as experienced through Chris’ discerning lens.⁣

“Most of the people that surround me are creatives – artists, musicians, actors, photographers, adventures, craft men and women. They all inspire me so much, and drive what Refueled magazine is all about. I strongly believe in cultivating and supporting a creative independent makers community.” ⁣
