Aalok Trivedi

Aalok Trivedi is a partially self-taught artist and printmaker from Frederick, MD. After receiving his degree in Design at The University of Maryland, College Park, Aalok went on to have a career as a UX/UI Designer for mobile and web apps in DC and New York City. His love and curiosity for printmaking started when he took a screenprinting class in college. However, after graduating, life and work took over, and art sat on the back burner for a while. It wasn’t until earlier this year, in 2022, that Aalok rediscovered his passion and made a serious effort to get back into creating more art.

He discovered Waldos & Company, a non-profit art studio space in Gettysburg, PA. Here, Aalok was able to access screenprinting equipment and a press to stoke his curiosity and explore more printmaking methods. 

Heavily influenced by the likes of Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian, Aalok’s artwork often focuses on the dichotomy of ‘structure vs organic’ and how seemingly chaotic elements work together to create balance and harmony. He especially loves combining many printmaking techniques, such as screenprinting, linocut, and drypoint, to take each method’s unique strengths to create the right textures and forms.

Although his work is mostly described as ‘geometric,’ he is often inspired by elements in nature, such as large monolithic rock structures, space, and interstellar objects. Many of his work serves as a commentary on mental health and inner conflicts. 

Unlike many professional printmakers, who happen to be very detail-oriented, structured, and plan every step of their process ahead of time, Aalok’s process is looser and stream-of-consciousness based. He isn’t too bothered by imperfections and ‘mistakes’ that occur throughout the printmaking process. He embraces these variations, adding to the originality and identity of each print.

Aalok has created more art in the past six months than he has in the past 10 years and hopes to continue this trend for years to come.
