Sarah Lee, also known as Ayeen, is a screen print and copper plate etching artist creating prints inspired by all things botanical and natural.

Sarah worked as a graphic designer in corporate businesses for over 10 years whilst making art on the side. In 2021, she finally decided to pursue a fulfilling and meaningful life and career as a full time artist. The same year, Sarah took a 4 week CMYK screen print class, which ignited a spark within her; “I thought instead of making digital reproduction prints of my art, I could possibly make and print my own work”. She was blown away, and immediately became hooked on the art of printmaking. Sarah quickly joined as a member of the Belfast Print Workshop (BPW) where she is continually learning and experimenting. More recently, she learnt the art of copper plate etching; “I love this process and find it lends well to my traditional drawing skills. I also find it a very therapeutic process!”

Located in the heart of the vibrant Cathedral Quarter of Belfast in Northern Ireland, all of Sarah’s printmaking takes place at BPW. Her current paper of choice is Somerset soft white, which suits both her screen prints and etchings. She prints her etchings on the Rochat Intaglio Press, and for her screen prints she is currently experimenting with True Grain, eliminating the digital process of scanning and editing in Photoshop in order to create positives.

Her work is heavily inspired by her love for nature, and her more conceptual pieces also reflect some of her life experiences and internal thoughts. “I’m fascinated how nature is so closely intertwined with human existence; how connected we are and in need of nature. The great outdoors is a place where I find much solace and rejuvenation of the body, mind and soul,” says the printmaker.

Sarah’s ideas are most often captured by photograph and/or sketches on site first. She then uses these as references, either drawing a rough sketch of how she wants her final piece to look, or in most cases she will dive straight in and work directly as she goes.

Looking to the future, Sarah hopes to further explore printmaking to bring the best possible outcome. She concludes; “I hope my art brings joy and inspiration as well as a sense of connection with oneself and nature to the viewer; it has brought me much peace and healing”.
