Clément Cases is a French Graphic designer, type-lover, and collector of graphic objet. He studied Graphic Design at the ISCID of Montauban in the south of France, where he graduated with a masters degree. During his schooling, Clément was able to hone his curiosity about the world of printing, to experiment, to get lost, to make mistakes, and to rethink. But above all, he aimed to look at the graphic design world from a critical position. Through exploring his love for beautiful things, and lots of hard work, Clément was able to try his hand at screen printing, Risograph, and manual binding across a range of diverse projects.

Upon graduating, Clément joined the team at Atelier Bulk where he worked with finishing and embellishment. Passion, rigour, and high standard printmaking was the ethos of the workshop. “It’s very inspiring to work in a place like l’atelier Bulk, to work with a team of passionate people, machine lovers, and to put the requirement at a very high level,” says Clément . During his time at the studio he was able to learn new printing processes, understand the subtleties of the printing process, and develop his desire to transgress, to seek new forms and ways of communicating via print. He tried his hand at hot-stamping, hand-binding, and all the finishing techniques for printed objects, whilst simultaneously carrying out research and development projects for luxury brands and paper manufacturers.

After almost two years with the Bulk team, Clément decided to start all over again. At the end of 2020 he moved to London to expand his skills and continue learning new things in the “land of William Morris”. Here, he has discovered the wonderful world of letterpress via the London Club for Book Arts; a process which he has fallen in love with due to the infinite results it can bring. Clément’s current work focuses on questioning the compositional process of letterpress printing, and aims to defy the aesthetics often attributed to the technique. Through these experiments he tries to form and emphasise the link between graphics and craftsmanship, without falling into boring or predictable results.

Clément is looking forward to continuing his research in letterpress printing, developing new formats, and working on new collaborations. He concludes; “The possibilities of print are infinite; the material, the surface, the textual perception, and its tangibility. The culmination of the way the work was designed, the process of its creating, and the medium used, and the way this interacts with the viewer through both touch and site, bring about a sensation that we can only receive from a printed objet”.
