At the beginning of 2022, Michael van Kekem reacted to an open call from graphic workshop Minnigh in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, calling for printmakers wanting to experiment with materials and techniques. After getting selected for their printmaking project ‘StartPress’, he got the chance to work with two techniques: carbon printing and plate lithography.
“I had once before made two plate litho prints during a masterclass, but I had never done anything with carbon printing. After a while I found it to be lithography using paper,” comments the printmaker.
A couple of years ago, Michael had scanned a large screen printed piece using black ink on the Risograph machine at the studio. He then had a big stock of two different prints which remained in his drawers for a while – until this project came along. Normally, with this paper lithography technique, one would use photos printed on a xerox machine, but Michael decided he wanted to see if he could produce imagery using his stack of Riso prints.
He ended up cutting up these Risograph prints into different shapes and forms, inking them up, and printing them on the etching press, getting a very experimental and playful end result. Because of the decay of the original print, Michael was only able to print each once.
The prints are currently being showcased at various exhibitions.
