Payton Doerner

Payton Doerner is a self taught block printer from Rochester, NY.  After completing a bachelors degree in American Sign Language, Payton now works full time at a school for the deaf, thus has no formal printmaking training. She created her small local business, Roc Block Prints, during the pandemic. Her carvings reflect her eclectic interests from nature, to tattoo flash. Payton mainly sells her work at local markets around her city. Her most recent projects include, hand printed camping themed bandanas, as well as some newer, spooky projects for the Halloween season.

Having not made art in years, as she “couldn’t find the perfect medium”, it was during COVID that Payton discovered block printing after seeing some clips of someone printmaking. That same day she went to her local craft store and bought the supplies she needed to try out block printing. Needless to say, she fell in love and has been creating ever since.

The inspiration for her creations comes from things that she sees out in nature, plants, and animals. Also a “tattoo collector”, a lot of her projects incorporate the two, and she has been told many times that a lot of her prints would make good tattoos.

Payton’s working process heavily revolves around her excitement for a new piece. Typically, she will draw up a sketch using her iPad Pro, then will touch up the sketch and make it more defined (this normally only takes her a day or two because she is so eager to carve it). Once the sketch is done, Payton traces the drawing right off of her iPad with some tracing paper, transfers it to the block, and then gets carving. A peice can take her anywhere from 1 to 3 hours to complete carving. Once it’s finished being carved, Payton will test it out using an ink pad to first check and make sure she has carved out everything that she intendeds to, and if all is good she goes ahead and prints using Speedball ink and her small Speedball press.

Payton is looking forward to getting more involved in her local artist community, and is currently planning out some products for Halloween season.
