Saki Matsumoto: Litho Prints

posted by POP Members February 18, 2020

Illustrator, graphic designer, and Official POP Member, Saki Matsumoto, has been working on a series of projects exploring her aesthetic inspirations through the medium of lithography. Most often working on graphic design projects for books, magazines, and advertising, Saki’s explorations in lithography allow her to experiment with a variety of themes and techniques learnt throughout her studies between Tokyo and Prague.

Lithography is a form of printmaking that involves using a flat stone or metal plate. Images are created on the plate and worked on using a greasy substance so that the ink will adhere to them, while the non-image areas are made ink-repellent. Saki’s litho printing projects have portrayed everything from a forest at night with an owl motif and lifeless characters inspired by events experienced in Prague, to an enchanted circus tent and fictional images of caves in a forest.  She has produced 4 colour prints on black and white papers, a piece inspired by her animation work, as well as an incredible project where she created a scratched and etched lithograph in 2 colours.
