Sun Night Editions

posted by POP Members July 14, 2020

Sun Night Editions is a fine art print publishing house in West Oakland, California run by Yoni Asega and Drew Grasso. It was founded in 2019 with the overall goal of connecting artists of all mediums with their community through the power of print. They aim to bridge the connection between artists, collectors, institutions, and non-profits. Their shop provides artists the ability to create works in traditional and contemporary screen printing, relief printing, monotype, and bookbinding techniques.

Over the past year, Sun Night Editions have published prints for artists from a wide variety of mediums and backgrounds, and has concerned itself with sustaining and strengthening the diversity essential to any viable movement toward the liberation of all people. Their mission is to provide artists the opportunity to create and experiment with traditional print techniques, while also imparting their artistic expression to the broader public through print at an affordable cost. The team are passionate about these processes because of their specific aesthetics, as well as their ties to grassroots social and political movements.

Currently, the duo are working on some exciting projects including Fight for BLM, where they have printed and handed out over 500 free protest posters for the fight for BLM. Sun Night Editions have also become the official printers for Oakland’s premier art gallery Part 2, and are editioning 1 or 2 artist prints a month with their represented artists. As well as this, they are also working on Print Resource in collaboration with fellow organisers Hanna Girma and Salome Asega. Print Resource is a print benefit organised by black cultural workers in partnership with black artists across the USA. Each limited edition print is available on a $100-$300 sliding scale, with all profits going to the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project at the Transgender Law Center, and People’s Breakfast Oakland.

Sun Night Editions are soon to celebrate their first anniversary with a print show at Classic Cars West in early September 2020, and hope to further develop ways of working alongside institutions to sell and create artworks with emerging artists.
