Free Font Vercetti Regular: A Year in Review and Future Plans

posted by POP Members October 9, 2023

A year after its initial release on September 8, 2022, free font Vercetti Regular is in the process of being updated to its second version, scheduled for release in 2024. Designers Richard Mandona and Filippos Fragkogiannis aim to enhance the current version with new symbols, numerous alternates and ligatures, along with improvements to the current character set.

“We aspire to a world where more valuable resources can be accessible to the public. Vercetti Regular is our humble contribution to that vision. By providing Vercetti for free, we aim to offer professionals and students a downloadable that will help them create projects of a higher standard.”

In it’s first year, Vercetti Regular has received an Award of Excellence in the 13th Annual Typography Competition organised by Communication Arts. Shortly thereafter, Vercetti participated in a group exhibition at the Museo Santo Domingo in Peru, securing another award by claiming first place in the Typographic Design category at the Peru Design Biennale 2022. In addition, the font also received a Silver Award at the 2024 Graphis Design Awards, a Merit at the 2022 Hiiibrand Awards, and a Bronze Award at the 2023 Creativepool Annual. Vercetti Regular was also named a Winner at the DNA Paris Design Awards 2023, won a Silver Award at the 2023 C-IDEA Design Awards, and secured three shortlist positions at the ADC 102nd Annual Awards. Finally, Awwwards listed Vercetti Regular among the top 100 free fonts for 2022.

“Considering that font evaluation typically relies on a range of criteria, including aesthetic qualities, technical proficiency, and cultural significance, we are pleased that the attributes incorporated into Vercetti Regular are distinctly notable.”

Drawing inspiration from humanistic and geometric design elements, Vercetti has a contemporary character and is effective when used in print or online. It provides a smooth reading experience, even at smaller sizes. The designers were influenced by MgOpen Moderna, an open source sans-serif typeface introduced by Magenta Ltd. in Greece in 2004. MgOpen Moderna draws inspiration from the design principles of Helvetica, embracing the simplicity of Modernism, with a neutral and clean construction suitable for small text and titles. With its renewed aesthetic, Vercetti Regular can now be used for new purposes, highlighting the idea that outdated, ineffective or inadequate digital fonts can be transformed and placed in a modern context.

“This approach not only revives the aesthetics of older typefaces, but also encourages designers to explore creative ways of redesigning existing elements, giving them a new outlook and perspective through their intervention.”

Vercetti Regular is free for both personal and commercial use, and with License Amicale (font file sharing is not only allowed but encouraged). It is available in OTF, TTF, WOFF and WOFF2 formats. Whether you’re an individual, designer, or business, you can download, share, and use Vercetti in any geographic region. By downloading Vercetti, you get the rights to use it in almost any kind of project, from print designs to digital applications, including social media, mobile apps, e-books, ads, games, broadcast, branding, packaging, posters, and logos.
