Phantom Shapes and Ghost Events

posted by Imy McNally April 10, 2018

Phantom Shapes and Ghost Events is an investigation of colour, print and collective memory by Artists Jason Urban & Leslie Mutchler. JULM Studios is a collaboration between two talented artists. Both Jason Urban and Leslie Mutchler currently teach at the University of Texas at Austin. Some of their current work focuses on print, shapes and lights.

The exhibition shows a contrast of a muted primary palette with grey images of residual protest and violence. They take a look back to the 1960s and 1970s as captured in printed matter from the same period. The installation of layered digital prints evoke the smoking and obscured remnants of a civil strife and political tumult at once too familiar and yet distant. The layering of large-scale, abstracted images printed on everyday bond paper suggests the brief and fragility of any one generation’s defining moments.

On each investigation, different details of the print become apparent. The printed components are over-printed digital on bond paper mounted with laser cut acrylic. The floor sculptures are EL wire on digital prints & mylar. The display of faded print against a selection of neon text provides for a truly satisfying use of multimedia working together very successfully.
