POP Member Showcase: 5 Digital Prints

posted by POP Members September 24, 2020

This month we’re excited to present a selection of digital print projects from members of our printmaking community. From typographic prints inspired by world-travels, to psychedelic and retro-inspired collages, our members have used digital printing to bring a variety of exciting projects to life.

Mabe: The Process of Doubt Often exploring the concept of space, Mabe has a very minimal, strong and recognisable approach. From original artworks, to digital illustrations, their work is a constant exploration into textures and materials with personal aesthetics. They state; “Doubt is a status between belief and disbelief which involves uncertainty. Without this critical function of doubt, human beings can be trapped with all kinds of false beliefs, knowledge, and misinformation“. This digital illustration was printed in A2 size on 310gsm Hahnemuhle German Etching paper.

Monica Wiesblott: Leonard and His Big Mouth Monica was contacted by a fellow artist who was starting an art consulting business and placing work for a luxury hotel in San Luis Obispo, California. The hotel proprietors had viewed her linocut work and wanted to use Leonard and His Big Mouth for their new hotel. Working with the art consulting business, she created a trio, adding a coloured background to work with the interior designers colour plan. The original image is 10×10 inches, but the project needed them much larger than she was able to accommodate in her studio. So Monica turned to giclée, and was able to print the unique edition of three made specifically for the project. The trio is displayed in the lobby greeting visitors and setting a mood for the hotel visit. They are viewable through the front windows from the street at dusk and seen during evening strolls by visitors in the downtown area.

Dotto: City Series Dotto’s city series are a set of prints and love letters to some of their favourite places. They were initially created by Dani as letterpress printed ‘Tiny Guides’ which she has since re-imagined as a set of huge art prints. Each design is a graphic and typographic interpretation of a moment in time, or a memory of a place. “Every time I visit a place, I take pictures. I note down colours that stand out, sounds I can hear, and the feel of a place. I always start with very rough doodles and evolve from that” describes Dani. Each one is very personal and representative of that particular place at that time. Dani then condenses all this down into simple shapes, type and colour. There are currently 8 cities; Amsterdam, Belfast, Berlin, Copenhagen, Manchester, Lisbon, Paris and Zurich as part of the ever-expanding collection.

Artwork by Blondie: A Holiday in Paradise This collection was ignited by the initial idea of juxtaposing holiday scenes. Artwork by Blondie’s collages have always had a similar theme of mysterious alternative realities, which enable her to escape to her own. At the beginning of the making process of the series, she was feeling frustrated, anxious, and wanted to pour that energy into making disruptive scenes. “Slowly but surely over time, this collection started to take a new turn. A low flame that’s been burning for a long time has been ignited” describes the artist. Thus, she put the stormy images aside, and started to create dreamy worlds containing rainbows, palm trees, gradient skies and pools made of stars and clouds. “My initial end goal changed from creating a hellish holiday to a playful paradise. Because in a time like this, when all seems doom and gloom, it’s nice to escape to a better place. Even if only for a minute” concludes Artwork by Blondie.
