55 Prints

55 Prints is a screen printing studio based in sunny St Leonards On Sea, UK. Although still a fairly new set up, they have had the pleasure of collaborating on some amazing projects with artists local and afar.

Director and owner Stephen Clements has a background in Art & Design, and has dreamt of setting up his own screen printing studio for many years. An artist himself, he takes inspiration largely from Op Art and Pop Art, and as a part-time DJ, loves projects that revolve around the music that inspires him. Projection mapping is also a speciality of his, and he has combined both his music and visual art for festivals and gigs.

Co-director and owner Alice Hull, comes from a less obvious background in International Development. However, she previously worked for a local artist and illustrator, and has always loved anything creative. Alice is keen on building the community aspect of Studio 55, and creating a space where all kinds of local artists can come together to inspire, uplift, and support one another, especially as the world faces such turmoil.

Together, they work with a variety of different artists, musicians, designers, and business owners from local to international, novice to exper,t creating vibrant prints using Permaset Aqua ink. “We pride ourselves on our consultation based service where we really work one-on-one with the client to delivery the best service we can. Our process is largely dependent on the artists themselves so we like to get a feel of the art, the message and the artist before starting any project,” comment the duo.

One of their regular clients is local street artist Shuby, whose work has a vibrant, colourful, and offbeat aesthetic. 55 Prints have bought this fun aesthetic to a range of screen printed goods including art editions and T-shirts. They have also worked with Ben Eine‘s creative agency, Our Types, on a number of different projects. Most recently this involved collaborating with London based artist and graphic designer Nerone, who is known for his bright floral urban art designs, producing About You; an 11 colour screen print.

Studio 55’s most recent project was a 16 colour screen print in collaboration with Peter Fillingham, former head of Sculpture at St Martins, which was conceived during the first UK lockdown. Previously, they also worked with Mew Welch, former Elastica band member and and local St Leonards based artist, producing an 11 colour screen print, Porcelain Leopard & Yucca.

Currently, the studio are working on a very exciting project with Mr Rasheed Araeen, a Karachi born, London-based conceptual artist, sculptor, painter, writer, and curator. Together, they will produce a collection of 6ft canvases. “For such large prints we face a brand new challenge of building bespoke equipment and materials from scratch, so watch this space as this will be quite the project!”
