Good Girl Gang

Founded by Nawel Hussain in 2018, Good Girl Gang offers organic, hand screen printed inclusive clothing with a message. Nawel tells us; “I like to create prints that reflect my experiences as well as other women, more exclusively WOC. I found growing up there was nothing I could wear that truly represented me so I decided to make them for myself.”

She currentlys run Good Girl Gang part time, after having left an art foundation course in 2015. Nawel is a self taught screen printer, and learnt everything she knows about the printing technique from YouTube as well as other creators in the community. “As someone who has never liked school, I’ve been really grateful and appreciative to all the free resources that are readily available as an alternative. The accessibility to learn new skills has never been more easy,” says the printmaker.

When she inititally started Good Girl Gang, Nawel’s aim was to create t shirts for the under-represented, and the inspiration for most of her designs came from her own life experiences as well as the discussions she had with fellow brown girls. Music and film are two other big influences on her works. She recently created a print inspired by the 70s icon Betty Davis and her empowering confidence in a time where black women weren’t allowed to be anything but the colour of their skin.

Nawel is also passionate about sustainabilty and environmental concerns. She comments; “As the fashion industry is already bombarded with huge amounts of waste from various fast fashion companies, I would love to start focusing more on up cycling. I have started by using my love of thrifting to find second hand clothing to print on, from trousers to more t shirts, being able to screen print anything I want is the best feeling ever!”

Looking to future plans, Nawel describes; “I would also love to share my love for screen printing with workshops for young girls as I feel like the space is very male dominated”.
