Fresh Prints of Lancaster

posted by POP Members May 15, 2020

Fresh Prints of Lancaster was started up by Gabrielle Shelley two years ago after she had created a few linoleum block prints during her time at Kutztown University, where she was partaking in a poster class. Never having time in her schedule to fit in an actual printmaking class, Gabby was lucky enough to have professors who were willing to help her out, in particular, Evan Summer, the former printmaking prof of KU, who let her use his studio and supplies.

After graduating with a BFA in Communication (Graphic) Design, Gabby developed an urge to start printing again. She ordered a huge box of supplies from Dick Blick, and began teaching herself to print by hand. Since then, Gabby has grown her hobby into a business; selling at shows, markets, and on Etsy. She also has a brick and mortar maker’s store in her hometown of Lancaster. Always looking for something new, be that a new venue, project, or a kind of ink to try out, she states; “I gain so much inspiration from my online friends and artists, and I truly believe we can learn so much from each other“. Gabby has recently ventured into teaching printmaking workshops for adults through PCA&D, and hopes to continue to lead more classes as she gets more comfortable with the role.

With botanical imagery a constant theme in her prints, Gabby’s love for plants and cooking, and the influence they provide her, is clearly portrayed. Keeping things simple, beautiful, and accessible is the main goal of every piece she creates, with every print pressed by hand. “I love celebrating the beauty of every day items and the living things around us.” concludes the artist.
