Seoul-based printmaker and illustrator Kelly Belter has recently set up her own Riso studio at home so that she can produce handmade zines. Since producing her first zine, Nest, which was a silkscreen accordion zine, Kelly realised that screen printing books was slightly impractical for making larger editions, and limited the amount of work she could create. Thus, she recently outfitted her home office with a RZ1050.

Kelly is currently working on a hand-bound zine project based on creative exercises and thought work for artists; “It’s an interactive zine that invites the reader to write inside and explore their own beliefs on creativity, perfectionism and self-worth along with a bevy of illustrations to accompany them“. Working with Riso has inspired her to create an online course that guides others through transforming their work into print, experimenting with both Riso and silkscreen processes to refine their personal style. The online course launches in August, and was inspired by the in-person workshops on art and creativity she has been leading with the Spoon culture house in Seoul. You can sign up to learn more about the class here.

Along with this, Kelly is co-creating a short graphic novel with a writer friend entitled Tongs for Moonjung. She is also working on a series of mixed-media screen prints based on a creation myth she has written. These new prints include layers of gouache along with screen printing, which is a new process she has fallen in love with.
