Bec Joy Prints

Becca Hovey is the artist behind Bec Joy Prints; a shop that includes orignal blockprinted designs in the form of art prints and textiles, including bandanas, tea towels, and more.

Blockprinting is the focus of Becca’ work, as she is “enamoured with the textures and constraints of the medium”. Her subject matter is largely inspired by the natural world she has witnessed living around the world. Summers spent on the Kenai Peninsula show through her work in the form of berries and mushrooms, while Becca’s current home on the Gulf Coast in Galveston, Texas appears in her work in the form of spoonbills, sargassum, and pelicans.

All of her pieces are printed by hand onto textiles and paper. Natural dyeing has become another focus in her work, and Becca is inspired by the hues derived from avocado skin, pomegranate extract, chestnut extract, and more. “I’m excited by my recent venture into screenprinting and am looking forward to diving into that medium as well… stay tuned,” says the printmaker.

Having worked across the world and across many fields – from cargo handler to car hop to artist, printmaking was introduced to Becca by a friend when she was living in San Diego, CA in 2017, and she was immediately hooked. She now works from her home studio in her little house in Galveston. Whilst Becca currently works exclusively with blockprints, she has also been working on digitising her designs, moving to incorporate screenprinting and digital printing of her work. “This will allow me to explore different ways to represent my work and allow for a bit of streamlining,” comments Becca.

Over the past couple years Becca has organised and hosted many blockprinting workshops; “It brings me joy to facilitate exploration into this medium and I always have a blast watching folks make their first print”. Thus far she has hosted workshops where participants have made their own blockprinted bandanas, tea towels, t-shirts, holiday cards, and art prints. Becca is looking forward to continuing to organise these events throughout her art career, as well as continuing to grow her business and financially sustain herself from her work.
