Monica Wiesblott

California based artist Monica Wiesblott creates images with ethereal characteristics evoking a mood, dream, or a long lost memory. Her methods of image making are varied, but always involve a journey and expression of the path taken.

Monica’s etchings are founded and created from photographs she has taken. Educated as a fine art photographer, her works are created to appear as though her camera has accompanied her into her dreams. Translating these images into small editions of intimate works with hand-mixed unique colours of ink allows her to achieve an expression of tone that ideally elicits a visceral response. The wiping and burnishing technique she uses selects areas to expose more fully or shadow more deeply, drawing from her past darkroom practice of burning and dodging.

As the recipient of the 2018 Creative Process Prize from the ON PAPER Contest, Monica incorporated ash that she collected from each of the evacuation areas she was in while fleeing the Thomas Fire in California. The ash was introduced to the image as well as the ink of the photopolymer etching.

Monica’s images encounter one of the many personalities one would interact with in a dream state. She is currently working on a series that plays on dreamscapes and introduces images that she has seen in her dreams with the addition of family and animals.
