Once again we’re stoked to present a selection of projects by our talented community. This month we are focusing on giclee printing; a method of creating a fine art print using a specialised high resolution inkjet printer. Our members have created stunning high quality prints reimaging their usual methods as well as taking inspiration from historical artistic movements.
Christa Stoop: SMAAK
The inspiration for these art prints by Christa Stoop came from a page title called ‘SMAAK’ in a Dutch paper magazine. “My eyes were drawn by this bold black font,” says the designer. Christa cut out the vertical black parts of the letters M and K and made a colourful geometric collage combined with white lines. The collection is a series of four which features repetitiveness in colours and shapes. The digital images she made using Photoshop are printed on Hahnemühle fine art paper and are available in an edition of fifteen.

Melissa North: London Triptych
London Triptych was created as part of a wider project where Melissa North was commissioned to produce a series of 48 UK location themed giclee prints for the Saga cruise liner, ‘Spirit of Adventure’. She used collage to bring together photographs, drawings, and textures. The triptych features imagery of Battersea Power Station, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and some of the city’s flora and fauna. Each print in the series is a limited edition of 50 printed onto heavyweight Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper. A digital version of the triptych was later displayed across digital billboards at Westfield shopping centres as part of an artist takeover. The prints are available to buy from her shop in A3 or A2.
Hinke Weikamp: Organic Prints
Besides making mono prints, Hinke Weikamp also makes giclee prints which have a very different atmosphere compared to her organic monoprints. For her giclee prints, Hinke starts by making black and white monoprints. Structure plays a major role here. She selects new cut-outs from the monoprints she has made. She blows them up enormously, alienating them from the original material, then prints them on Hahnemühle paper. The enlargement and the beautiful paper give them a new fibrous quality, which almost looks like fabric.
Emma Make: Female Bauhaus
This collection of giclee prints was inspired by Emma’s admiration of Bauhaus textiles, specifically those designed and made by women during the hiatus of the movement. “I wanted the prints to appear as tiny rugs mounted onto the paper, and tried to create my own interpretation of the repeat patterns often used by the female creators,” says the illustrator.
Caroline Tomlinson: Sand Dunes
“Sketchbook and travel are inseparable for my practise and have been a constant source of inspiration. Taking my sketchbooks with me on various adventures, near or far, has lead to quick sketches and mark making,” comments illustrator Caroline Tomlinson. These flourishes and loose marks are then used as a starting point when she returns to her studio. However, Caroline is constantly aware of not over working a piece, allowing for fewer marks to say more. This is a constant exploration of inky moments involving trial and error. This has also helped her confidence in creating pieces that have more expressive and abstract shapes. Sand Dunes is a good example of this: “After years of working as a commercial illustrator it has been good for my personal development to experiment with developing a looser visual language and line. Resisting the need to fill in the whole story and letting the marks say more.”
Alex Russell: Inkt Vis Inkt 
Inkt Vis Inkt is a series of one-off prints that explores the relationship between different printing technologies. The process began by Riso-printing content to scan and use as an image library. Alex then wrote code to generatively arrange this library into the final compositions. He says: “I modelled screen printing techniques such as masking off sections of exposed screens with paper stencils.” The series takes the extraordinarily rich tradition of printing somewhere new, only possible with the combination of creative code and giclée printing. Each one-off output occupies a unique space where generative code, printing hardware and hand-printing work together.
Isabelle Lin: Teacup Animals
Linocut printmaker Isabelle Lin has been curious about giclée printing for a while, and got to try it for the first time earlier this month! Wanting to see how strongly pigmented areas would come out, Isabelle made a small series of POSCA marker illustrations to test this. “I was really happy for the intense colours and matte finish! I’m hoping to extend this series soon,” comments the printmaker.
