Charta Picta Art Factory | Artist Residency, Workshop & Travelling Exhibition

posted by POP Members October 23, 2023

Charta Picta is a project created by collaborating artists Silvana Gaspari and Roberta Feoli De Lucia based at a historic paper mill in Vas, Italy. The collaboration was initiated after a pleasure visit to the mill quickly turned into a confrontation with the history, tradition, and research that Ivan Dal Toè, president of the LaCharta cultural association, provided to the pair. Their instinctive reaction to this beautiful encounter was to share the story of this ancient paper mill, capturing attention on various emotional and visual levels. With this in mind, an artists’ residency was created and a list of participants was drawn up. The participants went on to experience a series of special days with their fingers immersed between water and pulp, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Vas.

An exhibition was then inaugurated at the paper mill on the 1st of July 2023, and showcased the works that were created with handmade paper during the Artist’s residency. The exhibition also included three different workshops that looked at emotional watercolours, listening to the surroundings, and art printing. Some works were also exhibited in the heart of the town at the historic Locanda Solagna, who were also one of the sponsors of the event.

Other special moments included a live demonstration of paper making by master papermaker Valerio Pascucci from Fabriano, the provision of a long roll with calligraphy writing created by Sara Tisci, a travelling visit to the paper mill spaces with Ivan Dal Toè, and a taste of creative printing with Roberta Feoli De Lucia.

Roberta tells us; “These artistic events were created specifically for the exhibition because we firmly believe that the show shouldn’t just attract an audience that wants to “see” art but also has the duty of having people involved as active participants of the artistic production landscape.

Being able to offer a few hours of new knowledge related to colour, printing, and creativity is a sort of task that educates and advises those approaching exhibition spaces. For this reason, Roberta and Silvana define the Charta Picta project as an “art factory”; inviting artists to produce their own paper, think of an idea, realise it, and then exhibit it in an exciting way.

The invited artists include Claudia Corrent, Alessia De Bortoli, eeviac, Roberta Feoli De Lucia, Silvana Gaspari, Valeria Iseppi, Johann Merrich, Deirdre Kelly, Lia Malfermoni, Sara Manzan, Leonardo Marenghi, Michele Sambin, and Sara Tisci.

The next opportunity to discover Roberta and Silvana’s Charta Picta will be on November the 4th at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice. All of the contributing artists will reunite Vas with Venice again, and reconstruct the historic passage along the river from the mountains to the lagoon.

Two workshops will follow during the month of November, one dedicated to the colour chakras “Discovering the rainbow bridge – Watercolour workshop for the awakening of intuition and creativity”, and another looking at “From the milk carton to the printed idea – Graphics laboratory dedicated to “green” engraving, recycling and discovery sustainable alternatives” .
