Common Sense Studio: Surfers Against Sewage

posted by POP Members December 20, 2019

Plymouth based open access print space Common Sense Studio have been working in collaboration with Surfers Against Sewage on an open call for all artists and illustrators to submit artwork to be created as limited edition prints in 2020.

Operating by the ocean, the team at Common Sense Studio are very aware of the ocean’s impact on the world, with the effects of global warming, changes in weather and man made pollution. The team are incredibly mindful of these issues and aim to raise awareness through this collaboration. “The theme is around capturing and communicating the amazing work that Surfers Against Sewage have been doing over the decades and echoing their inspiring ethos. We’ve been offering time in our studio for artist wanting to make prints for the projects and all entry costs go to SAS towards their great work” explains studio partner, Emma.

Working alongside Circle Contemporary Gallery, the team formed a panel of judges choosing 20 winning entries which will form part of an exhibition of screen printed works held at Ocean Studios, Plymouth from the 10th December 2019. One of the amazing entries was created by another Official People of Print Member, KC Ford. KC produced a dotted illustration of a humpback whale using the cyanotype print method in order to introduce rich blue tones that replicate a humpback whale swimming in the deep ocean.

The winner has been announced as Tommy Parker, and the public can now bid for any of the artworks in the exhibition with 50% of proceeds going to Surfers Against Sewage.

You can check out the exhibition at Ocean Studios, Royal William Yard in Plymouth until Monday 13th January 2020.
