Printy Winty

Printy Winty, aka Sarah Payling, is an experimental linocut printmaker based in Bedfordshire. Her works often have a feminist theme, highlighting the obstacles that women are facing today and in the past. Sarah’s prints often focus on self reflection, with the creation of a series of self-portraits inspired by her role as a woman and a mother.

“Linocut satisfies the details side of me, I am able to plan and create at a slower pace. I have learned when to put the tools down, one mistake can be really obvious and ruin a print.”

Sarah’s prints begin as sketches in Procreate; “its a great way to experiment and see what is going to work before committing to the lino”. Sometimes, she needs to give herself some time to consider the direction of the print so she’ll put it away for a while. It is during this time that Sarah experiments with other printing methods and screen printing. “This is where I get my printing quick fix” says the printmaker. 

She uses a range of techniques to get her lino ready for cutting. Depending on the level of detail required, Sarah may draw straight onto the lino, or use the transfer method by using graphite paper and drawing over her original image. “There’s something about doing this that takes me back to my school days” describes Sarah.

“Linocutting is very satisfying, moving over the image and removing the pieces you don’t need, digging away the negative spaces is quite therapeutic.”

Sarah’s go to materials include Pfeil tools and Cranfield Safe Wash inks. This allows her to print at home without needing harmful chemicals, as well as a quick and easy clean up. Each of her lino prints are hand burnished; “having a small set up means I can essentially print any thing anywhere, as long as I’m willing to put in the elbow grease to print it”.
