DIMM is Diego Ignacio Miranda, a Chilean graphic designer and artist based in Barcelona. Diego’s work revolves around experimenting with new visual forms, geometrically abstracting both nature and everyday objects. By observing beyond superficial appearances, he has come to appreciate the subtlety of the structures present in his world. Diego creates prints that are vibrant with colour, hatching geometric shapes and diverse approaches to a reality that we all can relate to.

Diego was introduced to screenprinting whilst studying Graphic Design at the University of Chile. Subsequently, he undertook additional courses in Paris and Barcelona, where he currently resides. Screenprinting has evolved from being a hobby to his second occupation. After initially focusing on geometric and flat shapes, abstracting nature and uncovering its inherent patterns, Diego’s more recent work, instead, embraces halftones. “I intend to continue along this nature-geometry path, with geometric shapes prominently featured in my future work,” comments the artist.

Each of Diego’s projects begins by seeking an idea, concept, or source of inspiration. For instance, his most recent project involved a set of four postcards centred around gambling games, but the true inspiration lay in the significance of cards and what they symbolise for our destiny. Following this inspiration, he researches graphic references to guide his approach to the project. Subsequently, Diego sketches his ideas before transitioning to Illustrator for drawings, and Photoshop for finalising the artwork.

All of his printing is carried at his Printworkers workshop, where he have access to all of his printing tools and benefits from the knowledgeable guidance of Alex Costa, the owner. It’s here that Diego strives to match the colours he has previously chosen digitally. He tells us; “Since I lack a Pantone book, I rely on a preview of the print on my cellphone. Regarding paper, I consistently use 250gsm or higher, as I often print large shapes that demand substantial ink coverage”.

Diego was first inspired to create in this way during an art excursion to the woods. He stumbled upon a pinecone and was captivated by its diamond pattern. Geometries 1 resulted from this process, and marked the inception of his nature/geometry work. Major inspirations for his work today include the Bauhaus, Saul Bass, and Keith Haring. “Their work’s impact with simple and flat shapes reminds me that I can achieve great things with minimal elements; less is often more,” states the printmaker.

Future plans for Diego include incorporating typography and lettering into his work, and further developing his art.
