“The lockdown period was a magical moment for me” says Fabio Marangoni, a printmaker based in Padova, Italy. He continues; “What at first seemed like a forced effort to slow down, made me rediscover the free time that I hadn’t had for a long time”. This provided the opportunity for Fabio to further experiment and explore a world that has always fascinated him: paper making.
When making prints, it’s inevitable that some will go wrong; inking them too much or too little, or smudging the corner of the paper with your finger. Whilst printmaking, Fabio began to realise that he was throwing away more prints than he was keeping. Thus, he decided to recycle his “wrong” prints in order to turn them into paper which would be ready for printing new subjects. “It’s like a circle that closes and I really like this” he explains.
Fabio started experimenting with producing paper in his laboratory and, after several failed experiments and attempts, he reached an interesting, soft, very absorbent product, which gives value to prints and allows for a beautiful embossing effect.
“Making paper is a fun, exciting and very challenging thing! I can’t wait to experiment with new colours and new types of support.”
