Pernille Sand | Neon Alphabet

posted by POP Members June 19, 2023

Back in 2020, when the world shut down due to COVID-19, Pernille Sand, a Danish linocut printmaker, finally had the time to start on a project that had been on her mind for a while; an alphabet made entirely of neon letters. A Danish alphabet that is – 29 letters in total (we have the addition of æ, ø and å).

To make the project more complicated, Pernille decided to make each letter individually and in three different versions; red/pink, green/turquois, and grey. The project took her 4 months in total to complete. “But I really enjoyed making this alphabet – I love linocutting and printing, I am crazy about old neon signs and I am also into letters,” comments the printmaker.

The project got Pernille searching for neon signs in her hometown, Copenhagen. She tells us; “There aren’t that many here, so I really had to search”. Unable to find all of the letters, she had to design some of them herself (eg. the Å), but this presented a fun challenge as she is usually very dependent on photographic references.

“This project actually made me somewhat enjoy the covid lockdown! It brought me a lot of joy in those socially boring months.”
