Joanna Dowell

Surrey-born, and raised in Cornwall, Joanna Dowell originally trained as an Illustrator at Falmouth University. Her practice involved narrative based processes and worked both freelance and with London-based agency Artist Partners. Through the years print has come to dominate her practice and current work exploring the potential of printmaking for both commercial and personal projects.

Now practising as a lecturer, Dowell has been driven to find new and creative ways of how print can be used. This has included printing with chocolate, honey and road kill – yeah that’s right. Drawn to pushing the boundaries of processes, Dowell is currently pioneering a process which involves complex three-dimensional monotypes and etchings onto plaster.

Through this, albeit odd process, this innovative printmaker is currently in the process of establishing Hot Llama Press with the intention of printing a range of playful notebooks, cards and editioned prints. Fascinated by screen printing, Dowell has enjoyed working with glow-in-the-dark and thermochromic inks. Her inspiration comes from a variety of different sources, depending on the project and her latest project consists of a series of zines and cards based on iconic movies with strong female leads in them.

Her icons include printmaker Georgina Hounsome, from Pirrip Press who she had the pleasure of teaching alongside, with Hounsome teaching Dowell a lot about print. In addition, her love for the energy and texture of Joo Hee Yoon and Jonny Hannah’s illustrations are very much there as well as the atmospheric monotypes of John Virtue.
