Fabiolous: San Giorgio, A Tribute To Ljubljana

posted by POP Members May 8, 2020

After travelling to Ljubljana (Slovenia) for the first time in 2018, Fabiolous, aka Fabio Marangoni, returned a year later with a group of collaborators in order to create an artwork dedicated to Saint George, the patron of the city.

The holiday was made almost by chance, not too far from home; good food, lots of art” describes Fabio. He easily fell in love with the small city that is full of stimulus, places to discover, and interesting graphic design and art. In particular, Fabio was very impressed by the MGLC – The International Centre of Graphic Arts. Inside, in addition to the exhibitions, he discovered that there was a printing workshop dedicated to the artists that the institute host.

Upon his return to the city he was joined by three others who each practice different artistic characteristics, aiming to create a work that summarised them all: Andrea (a.k.a. Retinal Fetish) a writer, and Nicola and Richard who make up The Mesh Printing, a duo who are passionate about artistic screen prints.

The team decided to create a piece that would incorporate a tag by Retinal Fetish with the words “Ljubljana 2019”, two frames to print in white and gold by The Mesh, and Fabio would carve his first larger linocut of 35 cm (14” inch) inspired by his passion for medieval and classical art. “Once in the studio, we were almost kidnapped by the artistic spirit of all the artists who had printed in the studio before us” explains the printmaker. After 15 tests, they printed 15 copies on 3 types of FAVINI paper, 250gr.

The amazing thing was to see how the guys who worked in the centre were passionate with us step by step in creating this piece. A unique experience, which we will surely repeat” concludes Fabio.
