Dom Marshall

Dom Marshall graduated from Staffordshire University in the mid 90s with a degree in Surface Pattern Design and an MA in Ceramics, and went on to work in and around the world of ceramics and homewares. Always fascinated with screen printing, he commandeered the kitchen table during lockdown and has been working on refining his printing skills ever since.

From initially working with paper stencils, to progressing to creating artwork and exposing it on to screens, as well as creating individual images to print, Dom has developed a method for working in a confined space with limited working hours (he has to clear the table for tea). This has led to an approach which he likens to “drawing” with the screens.

After creating the design using his trusty Mac and Adobe Illustrator, the artwork is sent to a local printers for exposure on to screen. Having a maximum of 6 screens at any one time, and cramming as much artwork on to each one, Dom prints an element from one then picks up another screen and overprints, literally composing the image as he is going on. He sees the limitations of the number of screens which he can use, and has space for, and the limited scale at which he has room to work as a positive, giving his work a uniformity of scale and style. Colour is obviously an important part of this process, and is the key element in bringing the different strands of his work together.

Inspired by what he is surrounded by in his home, his work features lamps, vases, and lots of geometric pattern, as well as the recurring print character ‘Fred’ – based on a flour shaker found on his kitchen shelf. Fred was the subject of Dom’s first print, and he now refers to him as his “muse”.

Whilst still getting to grips with the process, and rather than wasting precious (and expensive paper), Dom has been really keen to print on to anything that is lying around the house. This led to a recent exhibition in his home town of Newcastle-under-Lyme, where under the theme of Green Town, he shared an exhibition space with other designers bringing attention to climate and environmental issues.

He is currently building up a portfolio of work to show at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair at the Victoria Baths in Manchester in October.
