Outer Space Press: Due to the recent outbreak of STUPIDITY

posted by POP Members December 16, 2020

Due to the recent outbreak of STUPIDITY is a little, precious looking artist’s publication by Magdalena Wysocka and Claudio Pogo, the duo behind Outer Space Press. Their art practice is based on collecting and re-contextualising photography, found books, and other archival print material in order to create new visual narratives.

The book was created during the first lockdown caused by Coronavirus in Germany, under self–isolation in April 2020. During this particular time toilet paper hoarding became a global phenomenon and inspired the duo in their research of the topic. This publication, made in a limited, signed edition of 25 and 5 AP’s, comes from this strange time of the year 2020 when something so mundane as a toilet paper roll became a prized possession.

Wysocka and Pogo often experiment with using their Risograph to print on difficult paper stocks, and this time wasn’t any different. Printing on toilet paper was not the easiest task, all of the sheets were first mounted on A3 pages of regular paper, printed, then ripped off, collected and bound by hand into little blocks. These blocks were glued into the hard cover cases, leaving the ‘spines’ and sewing pattern exposed. The book opens vertically; the experience of browsing it resembles that of the swiping motion in the Instagram feed, from which most of the images found in the book were taken from. Due to the recent outbreak of STUPIDITY is an extraordinary haptic experience, turning one of the cheapest and most common types of paper into a collectors item.
