Luke Matthews: Design for Mental Health

posted by POP Members January 14, 2021

Luke Matthews is the Head of Creative at a small design agency in the UK, producing typographic Risograph prints in his spare time. Educated with a BA (Hons) in Photography from UCA, throughout his studies Luke found himself more drawn towards design. Ever since, he has worked his way up through various design jobs, resulting in a position at a Top 3 B2B agency collaborating with international clients including Jagermeister, Castrol, and The Arcadia Group. However, “the grind and the atmosphere of a huge agency just felt counter-productive to the creativity” says Luke, and thus he made the decision to move to a smaller, more local agency, and, as a result he feels “much, MUCH happier”, and more connected to his clients and his work.

“The beginning of 2020 was tough, and I found myself slipping into old, bad, mental health habits around the beginning of lockdown” describes Luke. He started to design typographic posters as a way of keeping his mind busy, and work through some frustrations he was feeling towards not only political and social events, but also his own creativity. With his designs receiving great feedback from his followers on social media, Luke turned his designs into tactile posters with the help of Glasgow-based Risograph print shop, Sundays Print Service. Since then the project has gone from strength to strength, and he has sold 120+ prints all over the world from the UK to the US, from Austria to Norway, and from the UAE to Canada.

“I’m now, thankfully, in a much better place and the creative community played a big role in that” concludes the designer.
