2020 Bruno Press Calendar

Mary Bruno is an innovator and printmaker based in Minnesota, USA. She runs letterpress studio, Bruno Press, which she took over after the passing of her father in 2003. Mary has an irreverent line of greeting cards and more that is sold nationwide. She also teaches the art of letterpress printing through workshops, mirroring the skills her father taught her.

Mary organises international travelling art exhibitions with printers all over the world. She carves linoleum and hand-sets wood and lead type to make posters, broadsides, and many other products. Mary loves to collaborate with other printers, poets, musicians and other designers. Printing her designs is what feeds her soul, along with travel and meeting new people.

For the past nine years Mary has been collaborating with another Minnesota letterpress printer on a calendar project. Mary comes up with a theme and then carves all of the image blocks out of linoleum. The 2020 calendar’s theme is ‘Crafty Minnesota Booze Makers’. The calendar includes twelve images; each has a key block and a colour block making twenty-four blocks in total. Mary also carved a portrait of herself and her collaborator Andy Kahmann for the cover. She then sends the blocks to A to Z letterpress in Monteviedo, Minnesota where Andy begins the process of printing all five-hundred calendars. The duo hand set all the type and numbers, and score, collate, trim and hole punch all by hand. “It is a labour of love but they are so beautiful” concludes Mary.
