Angel Design Studio

posted by POP Members December 17, 2020

Founded by Ella Rankin, a graphic designer based in Milton Keynes, England, Angel Design Studio‘s practice focuses on typographic posters, inspired by music and the desire to motivate others. Alongside this, Ella also works as a freelance graphic designer, offering branding services, logos, packaging, business cards, and web design.

Growing up surrounded by creative people, artists, music, and design, has undoubtedly continued to make an impression on Ella’s pursuit of a career in design and her education. She studied Art, ICT and Photography, which set her up well to head into graphic design during college. Whilst studying, she also started up her own freelance design business on the side, sparking the creation of Angel Design Studio.

Her style is bold, focusing on the power of type. “I’ve really found my groove and design style, and my love for type keeps growing! During lockdown I wanted to find an outlet in which I could share my designs with others. I started creating pieces people could connect with in their own way” says the designer.

Ella conducts research through the creation of moodboards, using Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration. “I often find my self saving posts of type, colour combinations or visuals that inspire me to refer back to” describes Ella. She works mainly in Adobe Illustrator, and creates hand letter type in Procreate. She states; “I start in black and white; I believe any design has to work in black and white first. I then add colour variations once the design is finalised. Next, I consider textures, noise, colour and halftones, as well as details such as drop shadow and illustrative additions.”

Colour is a huge part of Ella’s work, and she takes inspiration from the Bauhaus movement; “I love this modern emphasis on type from so long ago”. The influence of Swiss and international design can also be seen in her typographic prints. This style demands a clean coherent design space, with a considerable amount of negative space given amongst elements.
