Michael van Kekem: Riso Zine

Rotterdam-based creative Michael van Kekem’s practice covers a diverse range of fields including Illustration, graphic design, and printmaking. One of his latest projects is a Risograph printed zine that is inspired by some of the poetic texts he has written over the past year and a half. “I decided to make an edition intuitively, re-reading the texts and then sit down, music on loud, sketch and convert all sketches into a multi-layered illustration by just cutting shapes and figures,” says the printmaker.

After having made some rough sketches, Michael decided to create all images in the zine by hand using paper and scissors. He then scanned these collages on his Risograph machine, and took a playful approach to the zine’s curation. Michael owns three Riso drum colours: yellow, red, and blue, thus he scanned each layer three times to experiment with the imagery and colour combinations, and was “pleasantly surprised” with the results.

The zine is still an ongoing project that is expanding as he experiments, with a hope to launch soon with an edition of 65 available through his various channels. So far he has illustrated approximately half of the zine, and printed all texts, with the cover and last few illustrations to be finalised. We can’t wait to see the finished publication!
