Shelly Brown: You’re Fucking Fabulous

posted by POP Members August 11, 2020

After a couple of months of being swept up in the Artist Support Pledge, Shelly Brown found herself a bit burnt out. Thus, she went back to the drawing board, wanting to make something bold, but that still felt like something she would make; “new work, new direction, new attitude“.

However, Shelly also wanted to make her business about giving back, so as of August this year she is choosing a different charity each month to donate a portion of profits from sales to. August’s charity is Care International UK, who are at the forefront of trying to end poverty by making sure women and girls are heard, and given equal opportunities and rights to earning money, sexual health, and to end violence against women.

This idea of sending a message of encouragement is where it all started. A lot of my work has plants and flowers as part of the image or the theme behind it. This is mainly due to my slight obsession with their meanings.

You’re Fucking Fabulous was sketched out one evening when Shelly was in a slump; “not feeling particularly confident in my abilities, I gave myself a little shove to step out of my comfort zone… To say fuck it and take a chance.” Shelly sketched out the text multiple times on its own, but discovered it needed something a little more to make it feel like her work, so she went back to her trusty Flowerpaedia by Cheralyn Darcey. She discovered sunflowers encapsulate the phrase, symbolising strength, happiness, confidence, self-esteem, and assertiveness. Hence, a two-block print with a border of bright yellow sunflowers, hugging the phrase was created declaring the positive message in a playful way.

The edition was printed on 8”x8” zerkall paper, using her Woodzilla press with Cranfield Caligo safe wash ink for the yellow layer, and speedball supergraphic black ink for the key block. Grab your print from her Etsy store here, and support a worthy cause giving women and girls the opportunities and tools to build confidence and live the life they deserve.
