New People of Print Member Kitty Frilling is a printmaker based in rural Oxfordshire. Originally from Kent, she moved to Banbury 8 years ago. The catalyst for becoming a printmaker was a late night spur of the moment application for a part time course at her local college, four years ago. Having been encouraged to give up studying Art after GCSE in favour of academic subjects she spent a decade wrestling with her desire to create art. The beauty of screen printing quickly found favour and after a promising year she was accepted onto an Access course at City of Oxford College. Here she was introduced to linocutting, falling madly in love with it from the first cut.
From there, Kitty moved on to a Creative Arts Foundation Degree with Oxford Brookes and with further guidance her passion for the medium was heavily cemented. The final project of her degree was a mixed-media commentary on the struggles with Borderline Personality Disorder; using washing machines as a metaphor for the stigma and process of rebuilding yourself.
Kitty had this to say on what’s next for her: “Since completing my degree I have been kept quite busy by life; I’m acquiring ideas and inspiration at a pretty fast pace! I have slowed down my creative output in order to let the dust settle and consider how to develop my style more now that I’m not working to such an eclectic range of briefs. There are several elements from my degree portfolio that I am keen to build upon; the architectural, typographical and bold graphical languages I worked with really fired me up! A lot of my other artistic endeavours have been autobiographical and I would like to explore that more in lino.”
This year Kitty has exhibited as part of Hatched 2018 at the Jam Factory, Oxford; Church Lane Gallery in Banbury and more. We’re excited to see what’s in store for her next!
