Naomi Arbuthnot, aka Naomi Prints, is an Irish printmaker based in Derry, Northern Ireland. She developed her passion for printmaking whilst studying for a degree in Fine Art Printmaking at the Belfast School of Art. Since graduating in 2019, Naomi has been practising a range of printing processes including screen print, linocut, Risography, large scale digital printing and photography. As a travel enthusiast, she loves to take photographs and recreate the places she has visited, be that Irish landscapes, architecture or nature. Through her prints, Naomi re-contextualises these photographs as bold and colourful artworks.
Whilst at university, Naomi explored the impact of travel, the passage of time and the memories that remain, and became fascinated with how memories magnify and distort random details from events and experiences. For her degree show, she created a series of lino blocks printed together to form a large scale collage of memories which included imagery of animals, nature, and travel.
After attending a screen printing course at Derry Print Workshop in 2019, Naomi’s love for screen printing was ignited, combining her passions for drawing, painting and digital design. Taking inspiration from Pop Artists such as Andy Warhol and Patrick Caulfield, as well as her travels, Naomi’s resulting works are characterised by vibrant colours and bold graphic drawings which depict architecture, landmarks, animals, and objects. Beginning her printmaking process by taking photographs of places, animals or still life, Naomi then digitally designs her prints before creating stencils for the screen. She keeps her drawings monotone, adding colour at the end.
“I love that printmaking enables me to use my drawing skills daily, and the ability to make multiples of one design. I find the whole process of printmaking meditative and relaxing, whether its carving a lino block, or digitally designing a new drawing for a screen print, mixing bold beautiful colours to print, and finally pulling the squeegee down the screen and revealing the finished piece” describes the artist.
Naomi hopes to continue to develop her printmaking skills, with the determination to combine lino and screen printing methods together to create multi-technique prints, as well as continuing to create her large-scale collage works.
