Vanda Sim Sim: Multiple Dimensions Series

Printmaker Vanda Sim Sim’s latest project, Multiple Dimensions Series, explores the dialogue between layers made with different printmaking techniques including screenprint, woodcut and linocut. The series of prints is a natural development from her previous project Spacial Memory Series (2017-2018) where she conducted similar technical experiments.

Vanda typically works with screenprinting; often preparing five or six screens which she then prints over using relief printing techniques, all in a very organic and experimental way creating unique proofs as the process evolves. “It´s interesting to see how the oil based inks of relief prints and the water-based inks of screenprint get together” explains Vanda. The “flaws” caused by the mixture creates some very interesting results, with the final print almost looking like a painting with seven, eight or more layers of flat shapes, subtle textures and volumes.

Despite her everyday job as a printmaking specialist technician at University of Evora, Vanda manages her time so she can print personal and commissioned projects on a daily basis, always searching for new colours and shape combinations and, of course, enjoying the experimental dimension that printmaking techniques offers.

Her work is characterised by the juxtaposition of bright colours and bold shapes supported by lots of visual research: internet, newspapers and typographical elements, all revealing her interest in the several forms of contemporary language that surround us. Advertisements, graffiti, urban landscapes, old and new architecture, the perception of the world in constant change, social relations; Vanda’s creative process has many inspirations. “Often, the messy and complex architectonic scenarios appear as a reflection, or as a metaphor of the fragility of our social interactions. Perhaps, even as a reflection of the multiplicity of realities and various purposes of a place” concludes the artist.
