Booba Prints

Booba Prints is the pseudonym of Sivan Baron; a printmaker based in North Vancouver, Canada, but originally from Israel. Sivan turned her dining area into her own little studio, and from here creates her beautiful linocut art prints, notebooks, and tote bags.

With an education background in illustration and animation (she attended design school in Israel and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication, as well as studying 3D and Character Animation in Israel as well as in Canada), her professional working practice has followed along the same line for the past 13 years. However, during the pandemic Sivan felt the urge to create something non digitally (since all of her work has been done on the computer), and she remembered a class she took during first year in design school in linocut printing. She describes; “I decided to give it a try, bought a few tools, little did I know I would fall in love with the technique, with the process, with working with my hands, and I’ve been doing it in the past year, and feel very inspired ever since.”

The inspiration behind Sivan’s work mostly comes from the natural world, with her prints often reflecting floral and botanical imagery. However, she comments; “I love flowers. I’m also inspired by strong beautiful women. Sometimes I like to combine the two in my art”. Some of her favourite artists who she looks to when creating include Mary Blair and Eyvind Earle, as well as many artists on social media who she interacts with on a daily basis.

Her working process starts with an idea roughly sketched on her tablet. Once she is happy with the idea, Sivan then prints it on paper, traces it to the lino block using a carbon paper, and then inks the block with Indian ink so it’s easier to see which parts are carved out and what stays in. She then carves the block (her favourite part), and rolls the ink on the block to print it. When printing she uses either a trusty wooden spoon or her printing press.

Sivan originally started her printmaking journey as a creative outlet, wanting to have a space to express herself with no limitations, leading to the opening of her store Booba Prints. She hopes to continue to expand her store, and explore new ideas and techniques. She says; “I am also very touched by the thought of people having something I created in their home, maybe they look at it and it gives them joy and inspiration, this is my driving force.”
