c33 Studio

Founded by Christie Photopoulou, a graphic designer, art director, and videographer based in Athens Greece, c33 studio is a way for her to differentiate this abstract art project from her other commercial work.

After studying H.N.D. Graphic Design in Athens and a BA Hons in Illustration at UWE Bristol, Christie began to work as a graphic designer in the magazine industry. Illustration was a side project and eventually, magazine design took over. She worked in Bristol and London for more than 10 years before making the move to Athens. While enjoying Art Direction and videography, Christie needed a less constricted, more free-flowing outlet for her creativity. The element of surprise, not knowing exactly what the outcome of a piece would be, is something really important to her practice.

Christie’s process involves the use of acrylic paint on thick paper, which were initially applied with expired bank cards. In order to scale up her work, she has now graduated to plastic spatulas for pigment application, although the bank cards are still part of the process. “There is an element of randomness to the shapes which is really exciting to create,” says the artist. She continues; “Even when the colour combinations and gestures are planned and rehearsed, the marks left on the paper are something that can vary completely from one image to the next. The simplification of shapes captures one’s imagination and can convey feeling differently to a literal representation.” This is the first time Christie’s work has been anything as intuitive and free as this, and she finds c33 studio is a joy to create for.

Inspiration for her colour combinations is found in many places; a piece of clothing, a runway show, nature, packaging design, or even an old photograph can become a starting point for a piece. Christie is looking forward to expanding her process and honing her skills while continuing to honour the freedom of the medium.
