Christa Stoop | Cees Study Strava

posted by POP Members November 23, 2023

These colourful artworks by Christa Stoop are based on a unique concept which she calls “Cees Study Strava” (CSS). Inspired by the passion for cycling shared by her father Cees and his friends, these works captures their scenic rides across the Northern Province of the Netherlands. Christa’s father tracks every ride with the Strava app, providing a virtual map of the picturesque Polder landscapes that define the area.

For these artworks Christa selected Polder landscape shapes adjacent to his cycling routes. This way, she knew for sure he had cycled along the landscape, ensuring it resonates with his memories. This is an integral part of Christa’s concept, giving the artwork a deep personal meaning. She then edited the works digitally, adding bright colours and a personal touch.

The first artwork in the series is called Ochtendrit (Morningride), reflecting the name Christa’s father gave his cycling tour that day on Strava. The other three artworks in the series are based on the same working process, with the addition of some black and white lines to the landscape, reminiscent of Christa’s signature style.

Through the creation of these artworks Christa’s profound connection with her father has elevated artistically. Furthermore, the series depicts the connection she has with the Polder landscape she grew up in and the geometric lines and shapes she likes so much.

To date, Christa has made several works with this concept, and it is still an ongoing project.
