Shelly Brown

Linocut artist Shelly Brown graduated from Cambridge School of art with a degree in Illustration in 2009. Her studies provided Shelly with the time to experiment across a variety of different media, from collage to screen printing, and everything in between.

After graduating, I didn’t quite have a direction to go in; children’s illustration didn’t quite fit, editorial seemed too fast paced, and I felt a little out of my depth” describes the printmaker. Fast forward to 2020, and Shelly has once again begun to draw, paint and print again, with the pure joy and relief it brings her keeping her motivated to pursue a career in art.

Lino printing has always been a medium she has returned to time and time again. Shelly’s approach to her designs is detailed yet naive, which could be seen as ‘rustic’ in the digital-focused world we are currently living in. Her work has a handmade aesthetic, illustrating the the time that has gone into creating each piece.

Until October last year, Shelly had hand-burnished all of her artworks using a wooden spoon (which she still practises with smaller prints). However, she has recently invested in a hot pink Woodzilla handmade printing press, which she has lovingly named ‘Pressilla’. “This has made printing larger pieces and pieces with lots of detail so much easier” explains Shelly.

For now her work space is in the lounge in her house, yet she is quickly filling up every inch of space. “This may be why during lockdown I have lent toward creating smaller prints” states the artist, specifically, her mini prints, which came about as Shelly wanted quick carves that she could finish in one night. After reaching out to her Instagram followers for suggestions for prints, she has worked her way through the submissions, enabling Shelly to better her technique and think outside of the box, tackling subject matter that isn’t something she would normally feature in her work.
