Jeremy Wat: Studio Workspace

posted by POP Members June 2, 2020

Jeremy Wat is a print and stamp maker based in Winnipeg, Canada. He carves his prints from his home where he lives with his wife and their two children. Jeremy’s wife is a creative designer and screen printer, and her business of screen printing onto apparel started up several years ago, so they already had a space in their house for burning screens, pulling prints, and storing a drying rack. However, Jeremy recently created his own workspace, clearing out the only remaining room in their house for him to carve, store his tools, and make prints.

His home studio is was a place where Jeremy can store sharp gouges, and leave his prints to dry without little curious hands to check out. “A part of me loved the process of planning out the space and organize what I need at arms reach” desribes the printmaker. It’s a space where he can show his kids how to safely carve and pull prints, just as his wife has done with her screen printing, all from the comfort of their own home. “We wanted our kids to be able to see the creative and handmade sides of their parents, and encourage them, if they’re interested, to pursue those fun ideas that pop into their head and have a space for them to do that” states Jeremy.

There are two tables in his workspace; one for carving, and the other for pulling prints. When there are times that Jeremy’s carving into his blocks, he often asks his children if they want to join him on the other table to draw or colour. It is the conversations that happen, and the ideas that come from their young creative minds, that have provided him with inspiration for some of the prints he’s created. “Having a dedicated space where we can all create together has absolutely been a part of influencing my work” he explains. Jeremy also believes that having a door to the workspace is imperative in order to have space to himself, and to think and carve in peace. This also allows other ideas to form without distraction, with most of his prints that follow coming to him whilst carving.
